Are Chiropractors Doctors?
Even though the art of chiropractic has been around for centuries there are still many who don’t understand what it’s about or what chiropractors really do. People are constantly asking are chiropractors doctors and the answer to that is yes, they most certainly are.
Chiropractors are actually Doctors of Chiropractic who are licensed once they have completed their extensive training. People often question the legitimacy of the training received by chiropractors, but in order to become a licensed doctor of chiropractic he or she has to complete 7 or 8 years of post secondary education—as many years as any other doctor. The vast difference is that while doctors of medicine have 2 years of general medical education before moving onto training for their area of specialty, a chiropractor spends their entire 3 or 4 years after university training specifically as a chiropractor. And while medical doctors training focuses on things like surgery and pharmacology, a chiropractor’s training focuses more on neurology, radiology and of course, spinal adjustment techniques. And in order to keep practicing chiropractics, the chiropractor needs to complete comprehensive annual board exams as well as continuing their education constantly.
People often associate chiropractors with “back cracking” and the treatment of neck and back pain, but they actually treat much more than that. Chiropractic care is based on the understanding that a properly aligned spinal column can alleviate various medical conditions and pain. This may sound strange to some, but to make it clearer; the spinal column houses your nervous system which is responsible for the function of your entire body. By maintaining proper alignment of your spinal column you are not just improving things like your range of motion but your health overall and that includes alleviating pain caused by a variety of things as well as better general health. This is achieved using various chiropractic adjustments and other techniques which are proven to be safe and extremely effective.
So what does all of this mean? It means that while your doctor can treat your pain and other conditions using medication and surgery, a chiropractor can do it all through the manipulation of your spinal column and other techniques that work the soft tissue like muscles, ligaments, etc. Keeping your spinal column aligned isn’t only about treating something but also working on prevention as many things can in fact be prevented if your neuro-musculoskeletal system is in proper working order. Does this mean that a chiropractor can treat everything related to your health? The answer that is no, but neither can any medical doctor which is why there are various specialty practices, hence your doctor sending you to a surgeon or oncologist or any other specialist depending on your needs. A doctor of chiropractic specializes in neuro-musculoskeletal conditions and as a result of their work other parts of your body are able to experience optimal health. At the end of it all though, chiropractors are indeed doctors who are highly trained and competent professionals with a deep understanding of human anatomy and health.
