Duties as a Chiropractor

Chiropractors are practitioners or physicians who diagnose and treat patients facing health problems of the musculoskeletal system that affect nervous system and general health. They deal specifically with the spine and manipulation of the spine. Chiropractor’s work is based on the principle that spinal joint misalignments interfere with the nervous system which can result in lower resistance to disease and diminished health.

In order to become licensed chiropractic practitioner in any state, 2 to 4 years of undergraduate education, need to complete 4 year chiropractic college course and also pass National and State examinations. Chiropractic is not considered a main stream medical practice and chiropractors are not considered medical doctors. They are issued a treatment license with different guidelines regarding what they treat and prescribe. Unlike medical doctors they are not allowed to prescribe medication or drugs and cannot perform surgery in most states.

Chiropractors believe in the innate power of human body to heal on its own. They thus treat the patients with methods implemented around this thinking. Although chiropractors and physicians and treat somewhat similar conditions as medical doctors, the scope of their practice is different state by state. They are spine specialists who treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between a body’s structure and spine and the functions of a body primarily controlled by nerves of the spinal cord. Doctors of chiropractic use hands-on therapy called manipulation or alignment of vertebrae that have been misplaced due to and injury or an accident.

Chiropractors follow standard routine of diagnosis to get information needed to treat patients. They carefully study the patient’s health history; conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations and other lab tests. X rays and other diagnostic images are important tools when emphasizing on misalignment of spine and its disorders. They analyze patient’s posture and spine using specialized techniques. Chiropractors manually adjust the spinal column in order to correct musculoskeletal disorders.

Therapies using heat, water, massage and acupuncture are used by the doctors of chiropractic for the treatment purpose. Chiropractic doctors often counsel patients about health concepts such as importance of nutrition and exercise, change in lifestyle and stress management. In addition to general chiropractic practice, some chiropractors specialize in sports injuries, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, nutrition and internal disorders.

A chiropractic physician focuses on the patient’s overall health. His basic duty is to provide natural, drugless, non-surgical health treatments relying on the body’s inherent recuperative abilities. They are experts in recognizing factors that affect health and hinder proper function of body. Chiropractic practitioners recommend changes in lifestyle that affect those factors.
